A special exhibition marking the 90th anniversary of the discovery of the Liangzhu Archaeological Site is underway at the Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, until Nov 29.
The exhibition brings together 124 jade cong(ancient Chinese artifacts from the Liangzhu civilization) and cong-shaped artifacts from 39 museums and cultural institutions in China and abroad.
TitledJade Cong: A Chronicle, the exhibition marks the first time a collection of these 5,000-year-old objects has been assembled at Liangzhu. Highlights include a 49-centimeter-tall, 17-section jade congfrom the British Museum, a 10-section piece from the Jinsha Site Museum in Chengdu, and a jade congdecorated with human and animal motifs from Tomb 20 at Fanshan Site in Hangzhou.
Spanning more than 800 square meters, the exhibition is divided into four sections: origins, convergence, inheritance, and transformation. It traces the evolution of jade congfrom their peak during the Liangzhu culture to their continued use and changing forms from the Longshan period (2900-2100 BC) through the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) and beyond.
Curator Zhao Ye said visitors should examine artifacts in relation to one another, including similar objects from different periods, rather than viewing each piece in isolation, with their forms, structures, and visual arrangements offering clues to how the tradition developed.
